Prior to the second round of the elections, they warned the Romanians that if a pro-Putin president is elected, the defense and economic support of the United States risks being drastically affected.
Alfred Moses, James Rosapepe, Michael Guest, Nicholas Taubman, Mark Gitenstein, Hans G. Klemm and Adrian Zuckerman are the seven former ambassadors who now congratulate him, in a common letter, Nicușor for the victory in the election held on May 18.
“Subsignates, former ambassadors of the United States in Romania, Republicans and Democrats from the Clinton administration to the Trump administration, we write to you not as official representatives of the United States Government, nor as a professional, but as American citizens. We address the hottest wishes and sincere greetings for your recent victory in the presidential elections. Your victory marks an important moment in the history of Romania“, They say in the letter, according to G4media.
The former ambassador believes that the victory of Nicușor Dan is a “proof” of the integrity of the democratic process in Romania.
“We congratulate Romania for the free and correct conduct of these elections, in accordance with the highest international standards. Your victory is a proof of the strength and integrity of the democratic process in Romania. A value shared by both our countries. Your choice reflects a clear commitment to the Romanian people towards NATO, the European Union and a desire to strengthen the strategic carriage relationship with the United States“They say.
They also claim that the Romanians “stood upright” and said “no” to Putin's candidate.
“We congratulate the government and the judicial system in Romania to protect the Romanian electoral process from Russian interference. Vladimir Putin and Russia's interference in the Romanian electoral process have threatened all the progress that Romania has made in the last 35 years since the Revolution. The Romanians understood the clear and present threat to the security, freedom and prosperity of Romania and rejected it. The Romanians stood upright and had the courage to say “no” to Putin's candidate”.
“We trust that, under your leadership, the security and prosperity of all Romanians will be assured. You will face challenges, as you focus on the essential reforms, on combating corruption and relaunching the economy, so that you build a better future for all Romanians”, The former ambassadors said.
