Saint Nicholas, he is Nikolai the Miner, he is Nikolai the Wonderworker – one of the most revered saints in the Russian people. It is considered the patron saint of sailors, merchants and children.
In honor of Nicholas the Ugodnik, two main holidays are celebrated in the year – May 22 and December 19 (although there are other days of his memory). On this occasion, in Rus' they said: “Two Nicholas with us – one with grass, the other in winter.” The herbs from this day really began to grow well, so the horses were already expelled into the night. For this, idle guys were equipped from each family and escorted them to the field. They gave them cakes with buckwheat porridge. In the evening, girls joined them – and the fun began with songs and round dances.
From Nikola, peasant life gradually went uphill. Warm weather was installed, pets were enough for fresh grass, cows and goats gave more milk – and therefore it was possible not to worry about how to feed the family and cattle.
They also paid attention to weather signs. If the morning was given wet and foggy, then it was necessary to wash his dew: it was prominent to a person health, and the earth – a rich harvest. The rain on Nicolas was considered a good sign.
