Marcel Ciolacu announced today his resignation from the PSD chief by posting on his social media channel by which he sent thanks to all his colleagues. “Today I took a difficult step, but necessary: I concluded the mandate of president of the Social Democratic Party, with a heart full of gratitude and respect for all those who were with me in this project.

It was an honor to lead the party that led Romania to NATO. The party that opened the doors to the European Union. The party that recently put the last point on the European integration map, by entering the Schengen area. No other political force in this country has in its history achievements so solidly related to national progress. Therefore, the PSD remains the most powerful Romanian political brand that we, the social-democrats, and all those who support us must be proud and which we will never doubt.

Thank you to everyone – from colleagues from the first line, to those in local organizations throughout the country. Each of the ones I talked to in these years taught me something and made me better. We have extraordinary people in the party. Brave people, sometimes silent, but tireless. I am leaning in front of each one. You are the soul of this party. Not the logo, not the functions – but you!

We lived together full years. I had successes, but also moments when I certainly went wrong. But I never wanted to hurt my country and Romanians. That was and will remain my faith. I first put the stability of the country and the interests of the citizens, even when I was criticized for difficult compromises. There were heavy decisions, but necessary to avoid dangerous skids and to maintain a clear, European and democratic direction for the country, in a period with war on border and multiple overlapping crises.

But today is time for other colleagues to take over. To take the PSD further, to a modern party, more adapted to the reality in which we live, but to remain close to people. Those who come should be encouraged and supported with all forces. The future of this party lies in the hands of those who truly believe in the values of solidarity, equity and social justice.

We must remember that PSD is deep Romania. It is the voice of many. It is the hope of those who do not shout and do not resort to violence to make themselves heard, but who are waiting for solutions for their lives. It is the power of the simple, the mothers who raise their children, the pensioners who have built this country and all those who work daily for their families and for a worthy future. And if sometimes we forgot this, if sometimes we lost our compass and forgot who we really are, then we have to go back to our authentic values.

I chose to stop here, but I don't go anywhere. I will remain a lifetime a man on the left. I remain close to you, as a member of this great political family, with all confidence that the Social Democratic Party will continue to be the main force of balance and progress in Romania.

I stay here. But not on stage. Not in the forehead, but in a row, but with the heart as related to the PSD as the first day. I am grateful that you have given me the confidence to lead the most important party of the country and that you have supported me to become prime minister of the Government of Romania.
Thank you. I love you. And please: Take care of each other, and never forget why we are here. For people. For justice. For hope. For faith! ”
