Zimbabwe has been reporting a sharp increase in cases and deaths caused by malaria for weeks. Over the past 17 weeks, the number of cases increased by 180 percent. Compared to the same period last year, and the number of deaths by as much as 218 percent.

In Zimbabwe last year until the end of the first week of May, 21,309 people fell ill with malaria, and 45 died, while in the same period of this year 59,647 cases and 143 deaths were reported – the Ministry of Health and Child Care said.
