Each summer resident knows how much time the weeding takes. Weeds grow faster than cultivated plants, selecting moisture and nutrients from them. But there are ways to reduce labor costs by creating beds that almost do not require care.
Here are some of them:
Close landing
When cultures grow close to each other, they create a shadow, interfering with weeds. The main thing is to observe the balance so that the plants have enough space for growth. For example, carrots and onions can be planted – they get along well and protect each other.
Dense cardboard
Instead of purchased geotextiles, you can use cardboard or ordinary oilcloth. Put the material on the ground, sprinkle with a thin layer of soil or compost and plant seedlings in cut openings. This will not let weeds grow, depriving them of light.
Dended coffee
The remains of coffee grounds mixed with soil not only scare away the slugs, but also slow down the growth of weeds. Coffee slightly acidifies the soil, which is useful for some crops: for example, tomatoes or zucchini.
Branches after trimming
Small branches remaining after spring pruning of trees can not be thrown away, but used as the basis for the bed. They are laid on the bottom, grass, leaves and earth are poured on top. It is quite difficult to get out of weeds through such a layer.
The summer season should not turn into an endless struggle with weeds. Sometimes it’s enough just to look at the problem from a different angle to find an effective solution.
