Donald Trump surprises. He will meet the former terrorist commander on Wednesday

– There is a new government and I hope that it will succeed (…) I wish Syria good luck, show us something special – said Trump during a speech on the investment forum in Riyadh, on the first days of his three -day journey around the Middle East.
He added that the US would take action to normalize relations with the new government, which they did not officially recognize before. “Let's give peace a chance,” Trump emphasized. He noted that he was encouraged by the leaders of Saudi Arabia and Turkey – Mohammed Bin Salman and Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The US imposed subsequent sanctions to Syria during the authoritarian reign of the Assad clan, which were overthrown in December 2024 by a coalition of Islamist rebels under the leadership of Gray. The current Syria leader has been in the past, among others commander of one of the Al-Qaeda branches.
New Syria government. Return in politics
The new government refuses to jihadist ideology, terror and hostility towards neighbors and ethnic minorities. Gray sought to get closer with the West and abolish sanctions, emphasizing that this is necessary for merging and rebuilding the country's civil war destroyed after nearly 14 years.
This is a surprising movement of Trump – commented the Reuters agency. The AP agency added that a clear change in the direction of American policy towards Syria is inconsistent with Israel's approach, which recognizes the new Syria authorities as a threat, marks the terrorist past of gray and warns against normalization of relations. The US has long had strained relations with Syria, which during the Cold War was an ally of the USSR and later Iran.
Trump also repeated the main points of his Middle Eastern policy during a speech in Riyadh. “My great hope, wish and even a dream is that Saudi Arabia will soon join the Abraham agreements (…), but it will happen in a timely manner,” said the American leader, referring to contracts negotiated during his previous term, under which the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco established diplomatic relations with Israel and recognized this state.
Despite advanced conversations, the agreement blocks the matter of Palestine's statehood. Saudi authorities consistently repeat that the condition of the contract must be the prospect of creating an independent Palestine, which the current government of Israel does not agree to.
Trump signs a strategic agreement
Earlier in Riyadh, Trump signed a strategic economic partnership agreement with Salman. Saudi Arabia will invest $ 600 billion in the American economy, of which on Tuesday contracts for contracts for $ 300 billion – the American leader pointed out. He added that he hopes that the total sum of Saudi investments will soon increase to $ 1 trillion, which was also confirmed by Salman.
Trump also said that his administration is working on the end of Israel's war as soon as possible with Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the release of all the hostages still imprisoned there.
He also stated that he was ready to conclude a nuclear agreement with Iran, which would limit the nuclear program of this country in exchange for the abolition of sanctions. He added that this offer “will not last forever” and in the case of its rejection of the USA “will show great pressure and lead to the complete suspension of the export of Iranian oil.” He repeated that Tehran could not get an atomic weapon.
