Semyon Ranopashets

On this day, the Russian Orthodox Church venerates Simeon a relative of the Lord-a holy martyr, one of the 70 apostles.

Semyon (Simeon) received his nickname due to the fact that plowing had already begun everywhere in Rus'. For the northern and central regions, it was considered early. “Early Pasha – the crops are good,” the people said. But it was impossible to rush with sowing either. It was customary to sow bread only in warm weather – and in warm land. To understand whether the soil was ready to accept the grain, both hands were put on it and checked how much it warmed up. It was also said that it was time to plow when the forest is dressed in the foliage.
