On Thursday, the European Parliament in Strasbourg supported changes regarding EU carbon dioxide emissions, which are to improve the situation of car producers. This is a reaction to competitive pressure in this sector from China and the USA.

In April, the European Commission proposed to manufacturers of passenger cars and delivery vans three years instead of adapting to the EU CO2 emissions reduction.
The idea was that they could avoid penalties in 2025 for not realizing the goals. These penalties – according to some estimates of automotive concerns – could amount to a total of EUR 15 billion.
The EU gradually reduces CO2 emission limits for the automotive sector. Currently, at least one -fifth sales of most automotive companies must be electric vehicles. Otherwise, manufacturers must pay penalties. Thanks to the proposed change, they will have until 2027 to adapt to the emission limits.
The EC suggestions are a response to the growing pressure from Chinese and American electric car manufacturers. Their entry into force requires the approval of EU countries within the EU Council and the European Parliament.
On Thursday, the European Parliament supported the EC offer at 458 votes for, 101 against and 14 abstaining.
“In the era of American, Chinese cars, punishing those who produce here, in Europe, combustion cars, does not make the slightest. That is why from the first days we sought and convinced the largest political groups to leave from it” – MEP Dariusz Joński (KO) told journalists in Strasbourg.
