Mark Klyuchnik

On this day, the memory of Mark – the Apostle from seventy, the faithful companion of the saints Paul and Barnabas, is celebrated.

The people called the Mark the key point, because there was a belief: it was this saint who stored the keys to which he can put up with the sky and release the rains. Therefore, on this day they prayed that drought did not happen.

The precipitation was guessed for the future. They said: “If there are three good rains in May, then there will be three years full of bread.” At the same time, a clear day on Mark promised a good crop of spring.

Mark Klyuchnik's Day was also called a bird holiday. At this time, the birds returned to their native lands with whole packs. The peasants went to the hemp fields in the morning and looked: if they fly on ptachi, the crop of this plant will be good. In this case, they scattered hemp seeds in the courtyard – for home and vital birds. Also on this day they went to catch Chizhe.

This day was associated with certain field cultures. So, they said: “Tatar is sown on the holy brand” (they called buckwheat).
