US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Houthi rebels have “capitulated” and promised that American air attacks will cease “with immediate effect”, AFP reports.
“Houthi have announced (…) that they no longer want to fight. They simply do not want to fight. And we will respect this. We will stop the bombings, and they have surrendered,” Trump said in the Oval Office, while being with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Cariy, according to Agerpres.
Supported by Iran, the declared enemy of Israel, the rebels Houthi are at war against the power of Yemen in 2014 and control much of this poor country in the Arabian peninsula, located over 1,800 km from the Israeli territory.
Since January 2024, the American army attacks Houthi positions in an attempt to put an end to rocket and drone attacks against Israel and freight ships using the Red Sea.
Houthi, who are part of Iran's “resistance axis” against Israel and United States, says they act in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, devastated by a military campaign launched by Israel after the surprise attack of Hamas on October 7, 2023.
Houthi attacks prevented ships from passing through the Suez Canal, a vital artery where 12% of worldwide maritime traffic are normally circulating. As a result, many companies were forced to make expensive detours through southern Africa.
Since taking over by President Trump in January, American air attacks have intensified, with almost daily blows in the last month.
The US Army has announced that it has hit over 1,000 targets in Yemen since mid -March.
Houthi's political leader announces: Attacks against Israel will continue
The Houthi rebels in Yemen on Tuesday promised a “lightning” response to Israel and will continue the blows on this country in response to the Israeli bombings, without mentioning the cessation of fire with the United States announced by Oman, AFP said.
The political leader of the rebels Houthi, Mahdi al-Mashat, promised a “lightning, painful and beyond what the Israeli enemy can bear, according to a statement that mentions that the blows” will continue “.
Israel bombarded on Tuesday, for the next consecutive day, infrastructures owned by Houthi, including the airport and power plants in Sanaa, responding to an attack by the projeranian insurgents on Tel Aviv.
Houthi rebels in Yemen and the United States have agreed on fire, Oman's Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi on Tuesday, shortly after Donald Trump announced the cessation of American attacks against these insurgents supported by Tehran.
“Following the recent discussions and contacts held by Sultanate Oman with the United States and the authorities of Sanaa (…) Efforts have led to a fire termination agreement between the two parties,” said the Omanese minister, specifying that “in the future, none of the two parties will target the other, including American ships, in the Red Sea.”
