Marcel Ciolacu should have left the government from the time of the annulment of the presidential elections of 2024, believes the political scientist and writer Stelian Tanase.

He was asked, in a show on B1 TV, to comment on the announcement of the PSD leader, made before the meeting this afternoon, according to which he will propose to the party colleagues to leave the ruling coalition, and then, if the decision is approved, he will resign from the position of premier. The political scientist said that he is “too much Ciolacu in Romanian politics” and that the PSD leader is associated “with the tricks, with the changes”.

Also, Stelian Tanase also pointed out that Marcel Ciolacu should have resigned from the position of prime minister at the latest with the departure of Klaus Iohannis from the Cotroceni Palace.

“It's a trick, a masquerade. They probably crammed him, he promised to resign and when he left there. (…) to resign, and the rest of the events will go afterwards.

What does Stelian Tanase say:

  • Ciolacu had to leave with Iohannis at the latest, best to leave at the end of November. Then it was clear that the government missed the election organization. If the elections are invalidated, the Constitutional Court, you, government, you feel guilty and resign.
  • It did not happen, it seemed to be preparing for the holidays, he had bought his pig.
  • I think he should leave. There is too much Ciolacu in Romanian politics. (..) We hear from him all the time only with tricks, with his mind, with resignation, he resign, he is not resignation.
  • He made a very bad campaign. In the end, he went to hand, like a fiancé, with Antonescu in the country and did nothing. You look at the map, it's gold, the whole map …
  • All the PSD branches voted against what Ciolacu wanted, who is their supreme boss. I don't know what else awaits. Waiting for yesterday, what is waiting for? To leave, it's good for everyone.

Later during the day of Monday, the PSD National Political Council decided to leave the party from the ruling coalition, following Marcel Ciolacu to resign from the position of prime minister.

“As I announced before the meeting, a ruling coalition was set up in December with two objectives. To have a stable government, with a majority in Parliament, and to have a common candidate to become the President of Romania. One of the two did not succeed. The exit from the ruling coalition, which implicitly leads to my resignation from the position of prime minister, which I will do after meeting you, “said Marcel Ciolacu, in front of the journalists, at the PSD headquarters.

Asked if the PSD ministers will remain in the Government to ensure the interim, Ciolacu replied: “It is a short period until a new coalition is created, I made the decision that they remain with PNL representatives, UDMR and, as they decide, they will do so.”

Ciolacu added that, after the new president of Romania will be elected, there will be a future coalition that will govern and it remains to be seen if the PSD will be part of it.

“These discussions will take place after we have a chosen president. I have listened to your voice lately, from television and media and listened to the voice of Romanians on Sunday and I think that the future president will decide with the parties that can create a majority in Parliament who will govern, who will be a prime minister. the leader of the social-democrats.

Ciolacu also stated that the party decided not to support any candidate in the presidential final scheduled on May 18.

Subsequently, the interim president of PNL Cătălin Predoiu announced, at the end of the meeting of the Political Bureau, that the Liberals will not give up the government, because both the ministers and the parliamentarians “swore that they will serve the interests of the Romanians”. He also confirmed that the party will support Nicușor Dan in the second round of the presidential elections.
