Luke's Day

Luke, whom Orthodox people remember on this day, was an apostle from seventy, an associate of St. Paul. He is revered as the author of one of the Gospels and the acts of the Holy Apostles. Luke is also considered the first icon painter and patron of doctors and painters.

In the period of round dances and games that was in May, not only the girls had fun, but also unclean power. The witches spread a white canvas on the grass and danced naked on it. The people believed that by this day the unclean were pregnant. If a woman wanted to conceive a child, she had to go to the forest glade, undress and quietly stand in the circle of witches. However, many were afraid that in this way the witch could throw a woman in the womb of her child. And the leader of all evil spirits was called the most cunning feature-Luka-Lukanka.

The name of the saint was also reflected in agriculture. Onions were planted on the beds of the bow: “Luke is like a Tatar: how the snow came down – so it is here.” This plant was considered healing in Rus' – and not in vain, subsequently its properties were confirmed by doctors. They said about Luke: “Onion from seven ailments”; “Who eats onions is spared from eternal torment”; “Luke and the bath will fix everything.” The bow was part of many popular drugs: in combination with honey, for example, used as a means of flu and atherosclerosis.

It was impossible to imagine Russian cuisine without a bow. He was eaten in raw form – with salt fish and bread. They put it in different dishes – added to meat, to fish, to vegetables.
