The number of Romanian voters outside the country who appeared at the polls for the first round of the 2025 presidential elections exceeded the 100,000 threshold, on Friday night, on the first day of the voting program in the diaspora. For comparison, at the first round of the presidentials held in November 2024 they had voted up to the same time a number of up to 41,000 voters. Then, however, the polling stations opened five hours later.

108,002 Romanians have already voted abroad on Friday, until 9:00 pm. Last year, until the same time, 40,916 voters in the diaspora had voted, according to official data, and throughout the day they had voted a total of 44,743.

In other words, participation in the ballot boxes in the diaspora today is at least 2.5 times higher than the previous similar poll.

In fact, the presence at the ballot box in the diaspora was kept high throughout the day, with a rate of about 10,000 votes expressed per hour.

It should be noted, however, that, during this voting day, the voters in the diaspora had several hours to show up to the ballot box, compared to the November 2024 poll.

Specifically, the voting program in the diaspora differs in this election compared to the one in November 2024. The polling stations were opened earlier, at 07:00 local time, and will close on Sunday at 9:00 pm, not at 9:00 pm.

Regarding the number of those in the diaspora who chose to vote by correspondence, it is similar to the one registered in the first round of last year. Thus, in November 2024 there were 4,106 voters on the correspondence lists, according to AEP data, and at this poll there were 4,227.
