In the province of Malaga in Spain, where almost 11,000 Romanians live, voted on Friday and Saturday, until 8 pm, more than double than the number of those who came to the ballot box at the same time at the first round of the presidential elections of November 2024.

  • The Romanians from the Diaspora vote for three days in the first round of the presidential elections of 2025. The sections from abroad are open from Friday to Sunday, between 7:00 and 21:00, the local time, with the mention that on Sunday the vote ends at the latest at 21:00, Romania time, regardless of the time zone.

The dry data show that the diaspora has now mobilized better than last year to vote. Until Saturday at 21, over 360,000 Romanians from abroad had already voted in the presidential elections. In Spain alone, a country where almost 630,000 Romanians live, over 48,000 of them had already expressed their voting option in the first two days.

In the province of Málaga, from the south of Spain, almost 11,000 Romanians live, who have four sections to vote. Until Saturday at 8 pm, 1144 Romanians voted in this province. In November 2024, until 23, 502 people came to the polling stations, that is less than half.

The Hotnews correspondent spoke with some of the people who came to sections 830 and 831 in Malaga. Most of them have stated that they want “a total change” in Romania. This although they live over 3500 kilometers from the country.

Vasile, who is a mechanic and has been working in Spain for 22 years, says that voted for the good of Romanians. “In the country it is getting worse and worse. The new president has to be serious, to hold with the citizens and to break away from the traditional parties,” he says.

He is afraid that the one who wins will be put to him, as in December. “But the world is already decided. We, the Romanians from the Diaspora, understand things better than those in the country, because we saw how they live here.

Nicole has tears in her eyes when she talks about Romania.

Nicole, and 22 years old in Spain, talks with tears in her eyes about Romania. “It must be changed for the Romanians to live better. The new president has to break away from the PSD and break the real estate mafia. A man who is not corrupt and be outside the system, that is.”

Even if it were better in Romania, he does not think he could return home. “I already have roots here, it is hard to go back. But when I talk about Romania, I have emotions and I give my tears,” she says.

“They played the votes of the people”

Gheorghe has been in Spain for 21 years.

Gheorghe has been in Spain for 21 years and says he works here as a musician. Came to the vote for a happier life. “Maybe God will not go outside. It was taken to us, we were bastard, they terrorized us who have been 35 years in power. We want change. Let these president and as prime minister be dated, Calin Georgescu is to come,” he says.

He is angry now because the elections of December 2024 have been canceled. “A great stupidity,” he calls it. “They played the votes of the people. In the diaspora, they were already voting in the second round when they canceled the elections. The new president only ask to keep their promises made to the people.

Alexander is in Spain for 20 years

Alexandru, who has been in Spain since 2005, is afraid that the elections now “could be stolen”. “It revolted me what happened then, that's why I'm here. These choices are a turning point,” he explains.

Like all the Romanians in Málaga, he wants a total change. He would return home, just to have where. “You have seen that in Romania all the products are more expensive than in Spain? Rice, water, oil, shampoo. Everything. The new president has to solve the problem of corruption. Our children are born. I and my wife work here, in Spain, the girl is 28 years old and she is in Italy,” says Alexander.

I vote with the thought of native Romania: “I would like to grow old!”

Adrian works on a freight truck

Adrian and his wife have been in Spain for 20 years. He works on a freight truck, goes all over Spain and says that only Galicia and Asturia can be as beautiful as Transylvania. He would like to return to Romania, but the hopes are getting lower. “I lost hope in the course. In Romania, it is worse from year to year, the lower level of living. Now, maybe something good, to have a small glimmer again,” he says.

“We made our lives here, we bought our houses. But I would like to grow old in Romania. Let's sell here and return. Now, not. First, to see that something is changing, that my parents are fine, that pensions have grown. Our child is here, and Romania for him is only a holiday destination,” he explains.

Daniel, who works in security services, is 23 years old in Spain. It would come to Romania, if they had a good salary and decent work. “The new president? To do what you need for the citizens. Be careful with the Romanians, not with the foreign population who comes to work in Romania. They should also improve the health system. With the old presidents, no change has been seen, because those in the diaspora have not returned.
