The American Chamber of Commerce (Amcham) asked the authorities to introduce exemptions from customs duties to small companies to protect the economy from recession – NBC reported on Thursday. The data published the previous day showed that the US economy shrunk in the first quarter by 0.3 percent.

The American Chamber of Commerce wants automatic abolition of duties for all small import companies and for all those products that “cannot be produced in the US”. Amcham justified this with the need to protect against recession and fear of causing small companies “irreversible damage”.

In the letter of the General Director of the Chamber, Suzanne Clark Amcham turned to key officials responsible for the economy, emphasizing that import duties are “a significant risk for (level) employment in the USA”.

“We are deeply concerned that even if the reach of the agreement takes only weeks or months, many small companies will suffer irreversible damage,” Clark wrote in a letter addressed to the ministers of trade and US finance.

On Thursday, the American Ministry of Labor in a weekly report announced that the number of newly submitted applications for unemployment benefit increased to the highest level for two months (although it is still at a level considered safe). The total number of Americans receiving the allowance increased to 1.92 million, which is the highest number since November 2021 – said AP.
