Senator Lindsey Graham, one of President Donald Trump's most influential allies, announced on Wednesday that over 72 American senators support a draft law that would impose sanctions “that will crush Russia” if President Vladimir Putin refuses to participate in serious negotiations for the end of the Ukraine. The proposed measures include 500% customs duties for countries that buy oil, natural gas or uranium in Russia.
“A tool in Trump's tool box”
The project, analyzed by Bloomberg, already has the support of party leaders in the Senate, including Republican John Thune and Democrat Chuck Schumer, according to Wall Street Journal. This wide consensus ensures approval in the Senate.
“The goal is to help the president”said Graham, emphasizing that the measures represent the position of the Senate towards the war. “I think Trump is the most appropriate person to get an honorable peace agreement, but Russia remains the main enemy.”
Graham warned the Kremlin not to underestimate Trump, calling the legislation “an instrument available to the administration”.
“When President Trump will consider that we have arrived in a deadlock, expect actions.”said the senator.
What provides for the law
Legislative text includes radical measures:
-Tax 500% customs on imports from countries buying hydrocarbons or uranium in Russia
-Intercation for US citizens to purchase Russian sovereign debts
-Llock access to the international financial system for entities that violate the embargo
Graham said he also has enough support in the representatives of the representatives to bring the project to the vote. “After all, Putin will have a choice: either negotiate or see how the Russian economy is crushed,” the senator provided.
The announcement comes on the same day that the US and Ukraine have signed an agreement through which American companies will be able to exploit the natural resources of Kiev. Also, the Chamber of Representatives started debates on a large support package for Ukraine, which includes: sanctions against Russian banks and officials, military aid and finance for reconstruction, designating a special coordinator for Ukraine.
“If this law passes, it will be the strongest signal sent to Russia from the beginning of the war“, Commented a security analyst.
Asked if Trump will approve the measures, Graham has remained diplomatic: “The president will make the decision that serves best to America's interests.”
