In search of lost time. Brief History: What happened to FC Argeș in the past 15 years
FC Argeș, one of Romania's tradition clubs, has had a turbulence route in the last 15 years.
Belels started in 2009, when the team was relegated due to the famous corruption scandal caused by Cornel Penescu. From there the drop started. The team agonized for several years in Liga 2, was abolished in 2013 and returned to life later, in 2017, after SCM Pitesti, the club set up by the City Hall, took over the brand.
In parallel, a team of supporters, FC Argeș 1953, established in 2014, was operating for a short time, when the community rejected the “artificial” team of the City Hall. Argeș returned to the first league in 2020, arrived in the play-off and the semifinals of the cup, then collapsed in 2023, retrograding to Liga 2.

In documents, the current club bears, starting with 2019, the name “Sports Club Football Club Arges”.
The reason? In order to have the right to promote in Liga 1, the activity of the FC Argeș football team was taken over in 2019 by the private law structure “Sports Club FC Arges”. The access to the first stage would not have been allowed to a public law club, as FC Argeș was since 2017, the year in which the brand returned to life after the bankruptcy in “Era Penescu”.
