A strong explosion shook the port Shahid Rajaee from Bandar Abbas, a city in southern Iran on Saturday, in an incident with at least 281 injured people, the state press reported, according to Reuters.

“The source of this incident was the explosion of several containers stored in the area of the deck in the port Shahid Rajaee. Currently, we evacuate and transfer the wounded to medical centers,” said a local official from the state television crisis management area.

At least 281 people were injured in the incident, the state press said, based on the information transmitted by the spokesman of the intervention teams. It is unclear if there are deaths.

Tasnim's semi-effect agency broadcast images of injured people who received care on the roadside, in the middle of confusion scenes.

The intervention forces continued the efforts to liquidate a large fire, and the authorities mentioned that the trucks in the area were evacuated and that the container warehouse in which the explosion was probably contained “dangerous goods and chemicals.”

State television claims that “negligence in manipulating flammable materials was a factor that contributed” to what happened.

The oil installations were not affected by the explosion, because the Iranian National Petroleum Company issued a statement saying: “The explosion and fire in the port of Shahid Rajaee have nothing to do with refineries, fuel tanks, distribution complexes and oil pipes related to this company”.

The breath of the explosion broke windows on a radius of several kilometers, according to the Iranian press.

Fars News reported that the explosion was heard even in Qeshm, an island located 26 kilometers south of Bandar Abass.

In 2020, the computers in the same port were hit a massive cyber attack. At that time, Washington Post wrote that behind the incident seemed to be Israel, the supreme enemy of Iran, as a respondent to an Iranian cyber attack.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli army did not respond at the time to confirm or deny a possible involvement of Israel in the explosion in the port Shahid Rajaee.

The explosion took place on the day when Iran began a third round of discussions with the USA, in Oman, on the theme of Tehran's nuclear program.
