George Santos, a former member of the US representative room, who was excluded from Congress after a short term and scandals, was sentenced by a federal judge to over seven years in prison, on Friday, for fraud and identity theft, reports Reuters.

In August 2024, Santos pleaded guilty for two of the 23 charges for which he was charged, being accused of swollen figures regarding the raising of funds and forged donors' names to qualify for the financial support of the Republican Party during the electoral cycle of 2022, when the newborn was chosen to represent a part of New York.

The 36-year-old man was sentenced by Judge Joanna Seybert in New York East District to 87 months in prison on Friday, and was ordered to surrender until July 25, New York Times reported.

“Mr. Santos, the words have consequences,” the judge said. “You have been chosen with your words, most of them being lies,” added Joanna Seybert.

In April, prosecutors sentenced a sentence of 87 months, saying that the upper limit of the punishments provided in such cases is adequate to reflect the severity of the unprecedented offenses that Santos committed.

Lied about much of his past

During his campaign, Santos claimed that he attended the University of New York, that he worked at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup and that his grandparents fled the Nazis during World War II. None of these statements were true.

In May 2023, he was charged by the federal authorities for washing the campaign funds in order to pay personal expenses, the debit of the donors' credit cards without their consent and the receiving of unemployment benefits.

As part of the agreement to recognize the guilt, Santos recognized all the illicit facts described in the indictment, even though in August 2024 he pleaded only for two of the 23 charges.

George Santos spent much of his 11 months of mandate targeted by scandals, marginalized by his colleagues in Congress and ironized in the nightmares of the television, following the disclosures about the small ones he said about his past.

A bipartized investigation of the Ethics Commission in the Chamber of Representatives has shown that he spent campaign money on Botox, luxury brands like Hermes, as well as Onlyfans, an online platform known for sexual content. It was excluded from the Chamber of Representatives in December 2023.
