Russia reserves the right to use nuclear weapons if they are facing Aggression from Western countries, Sergei Șoigu, a Top, Securitate, on Thursday, an interview with the TASS press agency, according to Reuters.

Șoigu's claims come in the context in which US President Donald Trump and JD Vance vice -president warned that Washington could give up trying to negotiate a Peace Agreement in Ukraine if no progress is soon on an agreement.

JD Vance reiterated this warning if both parties refuse to accept a “very explicit proposal”, which includes the recognition of Ukrainian territories under occupation as being Russia.

After taking over the second term of president in January, Trump changed US policy to the Ukraine war that lasts for more than three years, pressing Kiev to accept a ceasefire and while reducing the pressure on Moscow.

Şoigu, who has held the position of defense minister in the Russian government for over a decade, until he was appointed to the powerful Security Council, during a government reshuffle last year, invoked the changes made to the nuclear doctrine of Moscow on Thursday, changes approved by President Vladimir Putin in November last year.

According to the new provisions of the doctrine, Russia can consider a nuclear blow in response to a conventional attack on Russia or its Belarus ally, an attack that has “a critical threat to sovereignty and (or) their territorial integrity”.

“If other states commit unfriendly actions that represent a threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Russian Federation, our country considers that it is legitimate to take the symmetrical and asymmetrical measures to suppress such actions and prevent their repetition,” said Şoigu, in the interview.

Șoigu also said that Moscow “closely monitors” the “military preparations” of European countries, while they try to increase their defense expenses and production due to the reduction of the United States military presence on the European continent.

Russia reserves the right to use nuclear weapons if they are experiencing “unfriendly actions”, the official from Moscow pointed out.

“Nuclear discouragement is achieved against military states and coalitions that consider Russia as a potential opponent, possess weapons of mass destruction or have significant struggles of general use forces,” he added.

Russia has repeatedly launched nuclear threats against Ukraine and the West since the beginning of its large -scale invasion of February 2022.

Ukraine agreed to give up its nuclear weapons after signing the Budapest memorandum in 1994, through which the country also adhered to the non -proliferation treaty of nuclear weapons.

Instead, Kiev received security guarantees from the Grand powers, including the US, the United Kingdom and Russia. These guarantees have failed to prevent Moscow's aggression in 2014 in the Crimea and Donbas Peninsula and the invasion of 2022, notes The Kyiv Independent.

The Budapest memorandum was harshly criticized by the current Ukrainian leadership for the lack of solid security guarantees.

“Sending peace forces on Russia's historical territories can lead to World War.”

Şoigu also said that any future European peace forces in Ukraine to monitor a cessation of fire would also be considered by Kremlin as a challenge. He thus referred to the intention of several European states to send peace forces in Ukraine within the “coalition of the willingness” (“the coalition of goodwill”).

“The reasonable politicians in Europe understand that the implementation of such a scenario could lead to a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia or even to the outbreak of World War,” he warned, according to TASS.

According to Şoigu, the notion of “pacifiers” rather hides the pursuit of control over Ukraine and its mineral resources. “It would be more fair to call these troops invading or occupants,” he insisted.

“Because they would be troops from those NATO countries, which the presence of which Russia opposed itself just before the special military operation,” Şoigu continued.

He also stated that he suspects that the potential “pacifiers” would support the “Nazi regime”, “the persecution of Orthodox believers” and “the campaign to deprive the Russian population in Ukraine of the right to speak their mother tongue and to maintain its culture and traditions.”

“This would not be a mission to maintain peace,” concluded the Russian Secretary of the Security Council, stating that this could be the reason why “the true global majority showed little inclination to join similar initiatives to” maintain peace “.”
