It is up to Ukraine to decide its future, a Downing Street spokesman said on Wednesday, asked about the appeal of American vice -president JD Vance as Moscow and Kiev to exchange the territories to reach a cessation of fire, AFP reports.
“We support the efforts carried out by the United States to end the war. I think it is what we all want. But in the end, Ukraine must be the one who decides its future,” said the spokesman, in the context of discussions between Ukrainians, Americans and European.
The French Presidency also sent a message on Wednesday after the US Vice -President's proposal on “territorial exchanges” between Kiev and Moscow, stressing that respect for “territorial integrity and European vocation are very powerful demands of Europeans,” writes AFP.
“The objective remains to build a common approach that the United States could present to the Russians,” the Élysée Palace insisted, also in the context in which delegates France, the United Kingdom and Germany arrived in London on Wednesday to meet US and Ukrainian broadcasts in negotiations for an armistice in Ukraine.
US Vice President JD Vance told ARGRA on Wednesday, in India that Moscow and Kiev have to reach an agreement, otherwise Washington will end his efforts to reach an armistice. He added that “this means that the Ukrainians and Russians should – and some, and others – abandon some of the territory they currently own.”
JD Vance, ultimatum for Ukraine and Russia: “It's time to say yes”
“I made a very explicit proposal to both Russians and Ukrainians, and it is time for them to say” yes “or that the United States will withdraw from this process,” Vance told reporters during a four -day visit to India.
“I think the time has come to make, if not the final step, one of the final steps – namely, at a general level, the parties to say that we will stop the crimes, that we will freeze the territorial lines at a level close to the one in which it is today,” said Vance.
He acknowledged that the plan would require both Russia and Ukraine “to give up some of the territory they currently own.”
Previously, the Axios publication reported that US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, withdrew from Wednesday's discussions after Ukraine said he wants to focus on a 30-day fire proposal, rather than a wider frame.
This framework, according to the press agency, includes the US recognition of Crimea annexation by Russia, the de facto recognition of Moscow control over four other partially occupied Ukrainian regions, the reduction of sanctions and the promise of a future economic cooperation.
Axios noted that the security guarantees proposed for Ukraine remain vague.

Trump, who previously stated that he could reach a peace agreement in Ukraine within 24 hours of returning, proposed an unconditional cessation of fire in March. Kiev accepted this proposal in principle, but the Kremlin later rejected it.
Moreover, on Tuesday, the Kremlin warned against any “precipitation” in the discussions meant to obtain an armistice after over three Russian invasion.
