Survey: How many of the Romanians believe that Romania should approach Russia or leave NATO and EU

Beyond the intention to vote on the presidential elections of May 4 and 18, the recent Atlasintel survey for Hotnews also offers the answers of Romanians to several topics of general interest.

  • The Atlasintel survey was conducted on April 10-13, 2025 on a sample of 2,994 respondents, by the random digital recruitment method, has as universe the electorate in Romania and has an error margin of ± 2 percentage points at a level of 95%.

According to the research, only 4% of Romanians agree with the exit of Romania from NATO compared to 87% who oppose such a decision. Similar scores are also registered next to the question regarding the renunciation of the shield from Deveselu: 7% agree, 83% oppose.

The percentages favorable to the exit of Romania from the European Union are slightly higher than in the case of NATO – 14%, but the proportion for remains is overwhelming majority – 78%.

The proximity to Russia to the detriment of Western countries is rejected by 73% of the population compared to 14%, which agrees.

Romanians want progressive taxation and accession to euro currency

51% of the population declares itself favorable to the progressive taxation of wages and accession to the euro, and 44% agree with the reunification with the Republic of Moldova, compared to 29%.

Regarding the legalization of medicinal cannabis, the opinions are divided: 37% – yes, 22 – I do not know, 41% – no.

Regarding the legalization of the civil partnership for gay couples, most Romanians say NO – 55% compared to 26% who agree.
