Are the decisions on interest rates depend on politics?

From October 2023, interest rates in Poland remain at an unchanged level of 5.75 percent. Such a decision of the MPC causes frustration among borrowers who are struggling with high installments, and a surprise among economists, taking into account falling inflation.

Changing the position of the President of NBP Adam Glapiński in April 2025, who began to suggest the possibility of reduction of interest rates, may result from public appeals for relieving indebted Poles. They called for reduction, among others Rafał Trzaskowski, Szymon Hołownia and Karol Nawrocki.

Poles think it's politics

In a study conducted by opinion24, 51 percent respondents believe that the MPC decisions in at least half depend on political factors. In turn, 22 percent respondents claim that political reasons were decisive. Others (16 percent) claim that although political arguments had a large impact, economic factors were also taken into account.
