Gatti was hospitalized for two months at Buenos Aires. On Sunday, his family made the decision to disconnect it from the ventilation device, according to some medical sources confirmed by EFE. His health of the former footballer was worse after a domestic accident in February, which led to a serious respiratory infection that finally cost life.
765 games played
Throughout his career, Gatti has played over 400 matches for Boca Juniors and still holds the All-Time record for most appearances in the Primera Divisón in Argentina, with 765 matches in a 26-year career, which started in 1962 and ended in 1988.
He started at Atlanta, then went to River Plate and Gymnasia Y Esgrima to pay, before reaching Boca Juniors, where he became a real legend for over a decade. At “Xeneize”, he won three national titles (two in 1976 and one in 1981, in a team with Diego Maradona) and three international trophies: Copa Libertadores in 1977 and 1978 and the Intercontinental Cup in 1977.
Born in Carlos Tejedor, the province of Buenos Aires, in 1944, Gatti amazed the world of goalkeepers with his risky approach, his skills with the ball and his habit of playing well outside the box.
He also wore Argentina's national team's shirt, having 14 appearances between 1967 and 1977. After hanging the gloves in Cruise, he moved to Spain, where he became a popular football expert and commentator, known for his direct opinions and his charismatic personality.
Among those who said goodbye to Hugo Gatti was the Argentine President Javier Milei, a supporter of the Boca Juniors team and former amateur goalkeeper, who posted a photo of “El Loco” Gatti, accompanied by the message “Goodbye, colleague (if I can say so)” “referring to his own period spent at the Chacarita Juniors.
