The decrees concern the two former national security officers of Christopher Krebs and Miles Taylor, who publicly criticized Trump. Former president instructed the Prosecutor General Pam Bondi and the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Christie Noem to begin the investigation of their actions and report the results in the White House.
The signatures condemned these decrees, calling this a dangerous precedent and a sign of an authoritarian approach to power.
“The president should not use his power for personal revenge. This is the behavior of the despot, and not the leader of the Democratic Republic,” the letter says.
The authors emphasize that in the history of the United States there were already “dark chapters” when state power was turned into weapons, and dissent was suppressed. “These episodes are now considered as shameful deviations from the fundamental American principles of freedom of speech and impartial justice. Presidential memorandums of April 9 are a terrifying rejection of these fundamental democratic values,” the letter said.
Signers called for immediately cancel these memorandums. The document was signed by more than 200 people, among them the former assistant to Trump Anthony Skaramucci and his former Tai Cobb lawyer.
