The first sex room for detainees in Italy came into operation on Friday, when a prisoner was allowed to visit his partner, in a specially arranged space in a prison in the Umbria region, writes Reuters.
Private visits to some detainees are the result of a decision of the Constitutional Court that has recognized the right of detainees to have “intimate meetings” with the partners who visit them from the outside, notes Agerpres.
In the decision published in January 2024, the court established that the detainees should have the right to private meetings with the long -term wives or partners, without being supervised by the guards.
The decision mentioned that the so-called marital visits were already allowed in most European countries. The list includes France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden and others.
Guide of orientations
Last week, the Ministry of Justice issued an orientation guide stipulating that detainees are granted intimate meetings should have access to a room with a bed and toilet for a period of up to two hours.
According to the guide with these orientations, the door of the room should remain unlocked, giving the guards the possibility of intervening if necessary.
“We are happy because everything went smoothly, but it is necessary to maintain the maximum confidentiality to protect the people involved,” Ansa, the mediator for the rights of the detainees in Umbria, Giuseppe Caporio told the Ansa Agency.
Prisons in Italy have one of the highest overcrowding rates in Europe and have recently increased the number of suicides.
According to official data, the country has over 62,000 prisoners, with over 21% above the maximum official prisons capacity.
