American Senator Lisa Murkowski, a moderate republican in Alaska who voted almost all the nominations proposed by Donald Trump for his office, made a surprising statement about what it means to serve in a public office in a period when the Oval Office is occupied by a leader who seems determined to avenge his opponents.

“We are all fear,” Murkowski said, speaking on a conference in Anchorage, the largest city in the American state it represents in Congress. The senator made the comment after being asked from the public what they would tell people who are afraid or to those who represent in public inhabitants of the US who are afraid during this turbulent period.

After a break of about five seconds, Murkowski added: “It is a pretty strong statement. But we live in a time and in a place where, I do not know, I certainly have not been here before. I tell you honestly, I am often very anxious when it comes to using my voice, because the reprisals are real.”

Murkowski, considered a relatively independent voice in a more radicalized Republican party along the ideological faults, is one of the few Republicans in the Hill of the Capitol that publicly criticized President Donald Trump and members of his administration.

For example, after the heated exchange of replies that took place at the end of February at the White House between Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski and US Vice -President JD Vance, Markowski warned that the United States “moves away from our allies.”

Republican senator, a criticism of Elon Musk

It repeatedly criticized the Department for Government Efficient (Doge) led by Elon Musk, which he accused of creating “a huge amount of useless anxiety” and on the grounds to dismiss federal officials in his state.

Murkowski was one of the three Republican senators who voted against Pete Hegseth's confirmation as secretary of defense. The equality of votes, 50 “for” and 50 “against”, meant that JD Vance was forced to use his separation vote that the US Vice -President has as a nominal president of the Senate.

The Alaska Senator also counted among the only seven Republicans who voted in 2021 for Trump's conviction to his second process of dismissal and the only one of them who was at that time in the campaign for re -election.

“I only regret that our party seems to become Donald Trump's party,” she told CNN last year.

However, she voted this year in the Senate for almost all Trump's offices for high -ranking functions in her office. Apart from Hegseth, she only voted against Kash Patel's nomination for the position of FBI director, as CBS News shows.

Otherwise, she voted 20 times “for” the nominations made by the Republican leader, including in favor of controversial appointments such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as a secretary of health and Tulsi Gabbard at the management of the US Information Community.
