Elena Lasconi reacted on Thursday evening to the public appeal launched by former President Traian Basescu, who asked for an emergency meeting between her and Nicușor Dan for the designation of a unique right -wing candidate in the presidential race. The USR leader said he respects Basescu's experience, but that he does not see “real opening” for a dialogue, and said that Nicușor Dan's electorate could contribute, indirectly, to accessing candidates such as George Simion or Crin Antonescu.
“I respect him, I think the ten years experience as president matters enormously. He is afraid that we will have a final between Simion and Ponta or Antonescu and Ponta.
Elena Lasconi emphasized that the difference in electoral transfer between her and the mayor of the capital is significant: “One thing is certain, if Nicușor Dan was withdrawn, I can receive votes, but if I withdraw, he does not take anything from me. At the moment a vote for Nicușor Dan means, in fact, to Anton.”
Asked what happens in a scenario in which George Simion enters the second round with Nicușor Dan, Lasconi said: “If Simion with Nicușor would come in, I would win Simion. And here I have a problem. I say from what I have already lived last year.”
Former President Traian Basescu launched a public appeal on Thursday morning to USR Elena Lasconi's presidential and independent candidate Nicușor Dan, asking them to meet urgently to establish a unique candidate for May 4.
“The electorate is quickly heading to political options that will become irreversible in a few days. Responsibility for the country forces you to meet and set a single candidate. I know it is difficult, but you must do it,” Basescu said, in a message published on Facebook, warning that Romania will remain under the control of the PSD.
