Controversy around the privatization of the Great Beach in Ulcinj

The large beach, about 12 kilometers long, is called the “adriatic pearl”, is one of the most famous beaches in Montenegro and the longest in Europe. It is particularly known, among others among kitesurfing lovers.
The Prime Minister of Montenegro Milojko Spajić signed two contracts with ZAA, in February and at the end of March this year. The investor announced that he is planning to build facilities worth $ 30 billion on the beach, including the creation of tourist facilities, airport, hospital and two universities. It looks as if sheikhs wanted to create Dubai in the Balkans – or monaco.
The plans of the central authorities were openly opposed by the Ulcinj commune, where several demonstrations against the project took place. Also the President of Montenegro Jakv Mlatović emphasized that government plans are unconstitutional.
“Betrayal of Montenegro” – the protesters say
The coalition of ecological organizations “Great Beach or a Great Lie” organized a protest against the planned lease of the United Arab Emirates in Ulcin from the Adriatic Sea on Thursday in front of the Montenegro Parliament.
“Investors from ZAA will be in a privileged position in which they will not have to answer the authorities of Montenegro or follow our legislation,” said Jovana Janjuszević, one of the protest organizers.
“Do not reveal Montenegro”, “Profits for investors, commissions for politicians, concrete for citizens” – demonstrators gathered in the center of Podgorica wrote on banners.
Activists pointed out that planned investments on the beach will lead to environmental degradation, among others They will threaten one of the most important bird habitats in Europe. Janjuszević also pointed out that “the whole process is carried out at a galloping pace and is opaque.”
