Elena Lasconi, to whom the USR announced that she withdraws her support for supporting Nicușor Dan in the presidential race, “asked the permanent electoral authority to clarify how a handful of USR people play, in the campaign, with the party resources.”

Lasconi said on Wednesday, in a Facebook post that he “asked to be checked whether the USR financial resources were used directly or indirectly for another candidate.”

“In addition, AEP can determine whether those agent codes that have been assigned to me have been illegally used by some of my colleagues. And, very important, I asked the AEP to investigate how it is possible for a candidate, party president, to have access to the financial resources of the party that designated as a competitor in this election competition,” Elena continued.

A week ago, USR announced that he decided to withdraw the support of Elena Lasconi, the party leader, and to support Nicușor Dan in the presidential race. The ballots have already been printed, and the deadline for the withdrawal of the candidates was March 19, which means that it will appear as a candidate for the formation in the poll of May anyway.

The Central Electoral Bureau established on Saturday that the USR “cannot do an election campaign of any kind” to another candidate for the presidential election, as long as the party has a candidate, Elena Lasconi. USR challenged the decision in court and claimed a “political censorship masked under bureaucratic arguments”.

Also on Saturday, commenting on the BEC decision, Nicușor Dan said that “there is no state authority to prohibit a person, even if he is a member of a party, to express himself in one way or another” and that “we are in a democracy and any person has the right to change his mind.”

Today, Nicușor Dan sent a similar message and claimed that USR members want to support them do so at the level of a natural person.

“As natural persons, of course, I want as many people to take this campaign for me, to go with electoral materials, to talk to people, because it is a lot of misinformation. It is a war of information, to tell them, and the more people speak in the right direction, the better, the better,” the mayor said.
