The decision to close the entire eastern border of Finland, about 1300 km, will apply indefinitely – the Finnish government announced on Wednesday.

“Threats to the instrumental use of migrants” still exists, “justified the Council of Ministers, emphasizing that this is” one of Russia's methods to exert pressure and influence the security and social stability of Finland, as well as the European Union. “
All transitions to the Finnish-Russian land border in connection with the safety risk were first closed in mid-December 2023, when the mass influx of migrants began in the autumn of that year. At that time, within a dozen or so weeks, when the passages were still open, a total of over 1,300 migrants came to Finland without appropriate documents and mainly from the Middle East and Africa. According to the estimates of Finnish services among the arrivals, there could be people who pose a threat to the security of the country, including units related to extremist groups, armed groups or that could participate in organized smuggling of people.
In the spring of last year, Finland closed, also until further notice, border crossings with Russia on the Gulf of Finnish serving water movement. The Finnish eastern border with Russia is 1343.6 km, of which the land border is 1289.6 km, and on the Gulf of Finnish 54 km long. (PAP)
