French President Emmanuel Macron has decided to expel “12 agents working in the Algerian consular and diplomatic network” and recalls France's ambassador to Alger, Stéphane Romatet, as reprisals for similar expenses announced by Algeria, the Elysée Palace announced on Tuesday.
“The Algerian authorities bear responsibility for a brutal degradation of our bilateral relations,” the French presidency said in a statement, asking the Alger to “prove responsibility” for “resuming the dialogue.”
The 12 French officials expelled by Algeria are “on the way to France,” a French diplomatic source said.
The Algerian authorities said persona non grata 12 officials of the French Ministry of Interior, giving them 48 hours to leave Algeria in response to arrest in France, then detention, to an algerian consular employee.
Algeria defended its “sovereign” decision on Monday night, accusing the French Minister of Interior, Bruno Retailleau, of bearing the “full responsibility” of reappearing tensions between the two countries.
According to the Foreign Ministry of Paris, this would be the first expelling of some French diplomats in Algeria since this country has acquired its independence from France, in 1962.
