At least 32 people, including two children, lost their lives, and 84 other civilians were injured, in an attack that shocked the international community.

“The Government of Romania is in solidarity with Ukraine. Our condolences to the families of the victims of the horrible rocket attack of Russia, at Sumî, on this Sunday of Flowers. We firmly condemn this atrocity.”wrote Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu on Facebook.

The Sunday attack took place just two days after the St. Petersburg meeting between the US emissary Steve Witkoff and the Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a framework that should have served to resume peace negotiations. Instead, the reality on the ground was another: the Russian rockets fell over a peaceful city in the northeast of Ukraine, on a religious holiday.

European reactions: “a blatant contempt for human lives”

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, transmitted a firm message, in which he emphasized the unilateral character of the Russian aggression: “Everyone knows: this war was initiated by Russia and Russia is the one who chooses, daily, to continue – with a blatant contempt for human lives, international law and diplomatic efforts of President Trump. ”

Emmanuel Macron pleaded for “Firm measures” to impose an end to Russia's fire and said that France collaborates closely with the Allies in this regard.

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, qualified the attack as a “heartbreaking”, especially targeted civilians gathered in places of worship on the day of flowers.

“It is a terrible example of the escalation of violence by Russia, just as Ukraine accepted an unconditional armistice“She added, with reference to the US Fire Agreement mediated by Jeddah on March 11th.

“For Russia, nothing seems sacred anymore”

Katarina Mathernova, the EU ambassador to Ukraine, called the “a war crime” attack and transmitted that the European Union “intensifies its pressure on Russia and supports Ukraine by all possible means.”

“For Russia, nothing seems sacred – neither the churches, nor the children of Ukraine”said Mathernova, evoking the macabre symbolism of an attack on a community in prayer.

The leader from Chisinau, Maia Sandu, emphasizes that Russia chose to sow dead on the Sunday of Flowers, when Christians gather in prayer for peace, reiterating that the pain of the Ukrainians is also the pain of Moldovans who have to value the peace they have at home.
