China asked the United States on Sunday to “completely cancel” mutual customs taxes, after Washington's decision to exempt high-tech products, AFP reports.
“We urge the United States to take a big step to correct their mistakes, to completely cancel the bad practice of mutual taxes and to return to the correct way of mutual respect,” said a spokesman for the China Ministry, quoted in a statement, writes Agerpres.
In the middle of a commercial war with China that scares financial markets, the United States changed their position on Friday, exempting smartphones, computers and other electronic products from recent massive customs imposed by President Donald Trump.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce described the decision on Sunday as a “small step”, adding that it “evaluates the impact”.
According to a note of the US Customs Service on Friday evening, these exemptions are applied especially to electronic products imported to the United States in China, which was targeted by Wednesday of huge customs duties of 145%. US giant Apple, for example, produces its iPhones in China.
Beijing responded on Friday by increasing tariffs for all American products to 125%, a measure that entered into force on Saturday.
