The head of NATO warns. Russia can put nuclear weapons in space

“We have reports that Russia is considering the possibility of placing nuclear weapons in space,” said Mark Rutte in an interview with “Welt am Sonntag”. He noted that this is “very disturbing”. According to Rutte, such a step would be a violation of the Space Treaty of 1967.

NATO adapts to new events, said Rutte: “NATO allies adapt to the challenges in space, including to exchange intelligence and create national space command centers, but also to the development of smaller satellites that are more maneuverable and better protected.”

Eye to the Arctic

The Secretary General of NATO also told the newspaper that the Alliance intends to more and more to monitor the Arctic with satellites in the future. “We see how China and Russia are increasingly using new sea routes and militarize the parts of the Arctic,” Rutte said in an interview with the newspaper.

In his opinion, space technologies are an obvious solution: “satellites can help us monitor movements on land and at sea, while providing our soldiers with solid and safe communication.”
