The Senate approved Mike Huckabe as the ambassador in Israel

On Wednesday, the American Senate approved the candidacy of the former Governor of State Arkansas Mike Huckabe for the position of the US Ambassador in Israel. A 69-year-old conservative politician is known for pro-regional views. This nomination confirms the strong support of President Donald Trump for Israel, “Reuters commented.

All Senator with the majority of the Senate of the Republican Party voted for the candidacy of Huckabe, almost all representatives of the Democratic Party opposed her.

Huckabee is a Baptist pastor. Evangelical communities in the USA are known for his strong support for Israel and are an important part of the Trump's election base.

The newly appointed ambassador in 1996-2007 was the Governor of Arkansas. In 2008 he applied for a republican nomination in the presidential election.

The politician throughout his entire career was an avid supporter of Israel. He defended Jewish settlement on the occupied west shore, which is considered illegal by most countries of the world. In public statements, he also supported the annexation of this area by Israel and opposed the two -state solution, i.e. the creation of an independent Palestine next to Israel, which for many years was an official position of American diplomacy.

During the interrogations before Congress, he distanced himself from these statements, emphasizing that as an ambassador he would not push his own views, but represent Trump's policy.

Critics of Huckabe's candidacy emphasize that he is too biased to take this position, taking into account the delicate situation in the Middle East, “Reuters reported. He added that supporters of the new ambassador emphasized that he knew Israel well and visited him more than 100 times.

The United States is Israel's closest ally and his greatest trading partner. During his first term, Trump performed a number of pro -Israel gestures, including moved the American embassy in this country to Jerusalem. Most of the world countries maintain their embassies in Tel Aviv, recognizing that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, but the status of its annexed eastern part still requires a final explanation.

The Associated Press agency commented that Huckabe can help Trump in unsuccessful efforts to end the war in the Gaza Strip.
