The serious accident occurred after 2:00 in the morning, shortly after the police officers tried to stop a car in the Whickham area of Gateshead.
The driver of a BMW M Sport was chaotic on the highway and refused to stop at the police signal, so his follow -up was authorized, around 2:25 am on Thursday morning. Only two minutes later, the car and five police vehicles were involved in a serious accident, and one A1 section remained closed in both directions for more than 12 hours.
Four marked police cars were severely damaged, one of them was snatched by the roof and the doors, while the fifth patrol car, but did not have the police marks, overturned on one side.
Seven police officers were urgently transported to the hospital. Four of them were discharged, while two remained under medical observation, and one receives care for a foot injury.
The two occupants of the BMW, a man and a woman, both 20 years old, were not injured, but they were detained by the authorities and are investigated.
The double highway has been closed for several hours between Swalwell and Denton junction.
What the witnesses say
Several people who live near the place where the accident took place, awakened by the police helicopters who were swollen, still in shock and described it as “an absolute carnage”.
Avril Smith lived near the highway for 27 years and remained terrified of carambol.
“It was an absolute carnage. The sound of the police helicopter was the one who woke me at 2.45 in the morning. I got up and went to the other bedroom, and when I opened the blinds there were police and ambulances everywhere. I knew then something serious had happened. I haven't seen anything so serious,” It up to her for Dailymail.
“I was simply shocked when I saw what happened. It was crazy to see so much slaughter. I have been here for 20 years and the only important thing we know happened here was when the Raoul Moat shot the police officer,” told another resident in the area.
