Matrena is a newcomer, a half -reward

Solunskaya Matrona, whose memory is celebrated on this day, lived in Thessaloniki in the 3-4 centuries and was a slave to the Jews of Pavtila.

In the Russian people, Matryon (Matron) gave two nicknames. One of them – a chin – was due to the fact that in the spring after large thaws, the surface of the snow is covered with a solid nast. They were also called the Chibis, who returned home from warm edges to Matrynin.

At this time, the housewives went out to whiten the canvases for the last time, laying them out on a snowstock. All women (and especially the weaver) asked for blessings to work in St. Matryona. It is no coincidence that she was considered the patroness of the hostesses.

Matryona was also asked for turnips – one of the main ingredients in peasant cuisine. In some places, this day was called a half -reward, as it was customary to divide all reserves of vegetables into two parts: the best turnips were put off for the future breeding of seeds, and food was prepared from the remaining ones. In Rus' they knew a lot of turnips from turnips: it was stuffed, cooked, soared, made of mashed potatoes and casseroles. About how common they were, says the saying that has survived to our time: “easier to steam turnip.”

People noted: the rivers swell and rise to Matryon. At this time they said: “The pike breaks the ice with his tail”; “Vegetable ice, that someone else's threshold is unreliable”; “Chibis flew, brought water on the tail.” By the way, they also made conclusions about the upcoming weather: if the bird screams in the evening, it will be clear; If it flies low, dry days will stand for a long time.
