Romania has about 4 million people without a job and who do not actively seek to hire. Studies show, however, that more than half of them would like to work, but I do not know how to find a job.
Millions of Romanians say they would like to get hired but I don't know how to find a job
The digital transformation of the economy has brought multiple benefits on the labor market, but also created a gap between those who have some digital skills and those who do not have them. Romania is constantly in the last places in the EU in terms of digital literacy: only 28% of citizens had in 2023 basic or fish skills, compared to the EU average of 55%, according to Eurostat data.
The disappearance is deeper among the vulnerable population. Only 25% of women over 65 have basic digital skills, compared to over 70% of young people 25–34 years old. This difference in access to digital instruments leads to an involuntary exclusion from the labor market, according to the study of deucru.ro.
According to ins and Eurostat data, about 4 million Romanians fit for work are economically inactive, that is, they do not work and do not actively look for a job. Estimates suggest that over 2 million of them would like to work, but are prevented by the lack of access to recruitment platforms to use.
These people – mostly people over 45, without digital skills, from rural or peripheral urban areas – continue to rely on traditional methods of employment. But their efficiency is extremely low:
• Only 2% of them find work through personal recommendations.
• Only 1% by ads in newspapers or local notice.
• 4% succeed in direct presentation to companies, but with logistical effort and lack of transparency.
• 1% through state agencies for employment, where bureaucracy is often discouraging.
Another method that is very little talked about is to send the CV of the company in which you want to work, without signaling the position you want to occupy. Most of the time, this method gives results, leaving you the opportunity to refuse the job if it does not suit you.
