We want our candidate at our side and the urn of the election in front of us,” said Ozgur Ozel, chairman of the Republican People's Party (CHP), addressing the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the extraordinary party congress in Ankara.

The stopping of the imamogle on March 19 caused a wave of social protests in Turkey for over a decade. The politician was charged with corruption and relationships with a terrorist organization. Based on corruption allegations, on March 23, he was arrested during further proceedings. On the same day, CHP chose him for its candidate in the presidential election in 2028.

In the local elections in March 2024, CHP took first place, winning 37.8 percent. votes throughout the country and taking over power, in addition to Istanbul and Ankara, in subsequent AKP bastions, the party of President Erdogan. (PAP)
