With the end of the production of energy -based energy, the annual carbon dioxide emission in Helsinki will drop by about 30 percent, and throughout Finland the emissions will fall by almost 2 percent. At the same time – said Energetyczna Helen – “a departure from carbon is a specific step towards a clean, self -sufficient and inexpensive energy production.” Thanks to investments in clean energy sources since spring 2024 in Helsinki, prices for network heating have been reduced twice – it was emphasized in the press release.

Originally, the Salmisaari CHP carbon block, launched in the mid -1980s, was to be excluded from operation a year ago, but due to, among others For less use of heating oil and uncertain supplies of natural gas, its use for the heating season 2024-2025 was extended.

In the heating plant, in order to replace hard coal, a boiler room was built with biomass and pellets. As part of a clean transformation, an industrial heat pump and two electric boilers were also invested.

As early as 2022, the share of coal in heating in Helsinki accounted for about 60 percent. The Helsinki CHP plant closed the coal block earlier than the local law obliges to do so, according to which in Finland it will be prohibited to use coal in the energy sector from May 2029. However, Finland has coal reserves, which can be used if necessary due to the safety of deliveries and covering extraordinary demand.
