The letters reported the abolition of their humanitarian status and the requirement to leave the country within seven days. Otherwise, as noted, federal law enforcement agencies will take up the case.
“If you do not immediately leave the United States, can take measures of law enforcement agencies that will lead to your deportation from the country. We repeatedly report: the Ministry of Internal Security (DHS) will cancel your humanitarian status. Do not try to stay in the United States,” the letter sent to the Ukrainians said.
The media writes that the speaker of the US Department of Internal Security Trisha Maclaflin called the content of the letters erroneous. According to her, the humanitarian program for Ukrainians, which was introduced in 2022 after a full-scale invasion of the Russian aggressor country, was not canceled.
The agency added that on April 4, the US Department of Internal Security sent a new message to the victims with an apology, in which it was noted that the previous order was sent by mistake and “the conditions of your humanitarian status issued earlier remained unchanged.”
Journalists noted that the incident caused a wave of anxiety among the Ukrainian diaspora and public organizations supporting refugees in the United States.
The Washington Post reports that Rabbi James Green, director of Jewish Family Service of Western Massachusets, helping immigrants and refugees, said that his organization received a message about such letters in California, Washington, Connecticut, New Gampshire and Massachusetts.
The Democrat Senator Edward Mark from Massachusetts said that to say to the Ukrainians, that they “should return to the zone of active hostilities after seven days or they will be pursued-this is immoral.”
“The imprudence and cruelty of the administration [президента США Дональда] Trump continues to amaze, and they should be held accountable, ”he said.
