Nikonov Day
Nikon Pechersky, whose memory is celebrated on this day, lived in the 11th century. He became famous as an emergency scientist.
In Rus' it was a day of thorough cleaning – both in the house and in the garden. On this occasion they said: “The house is not great, but does not tell you to sit down”; “You can’t redo homework”; “The house is great.” The crumbling owners whitened the stoves, shook their beds, changed straw in mattresses, carried out garbage.
Also was washed shops, floors and tables in the house – for this they often used dried mint infusion. Mint was used both when brewing tea, and in the preparation of kvass, and when baking gingerbread. In many villages, Mint was considered a guarantee of good sleep – her bundles were hung in the rooms.
They did not do without mint even in the bathhouse, where they went after the tidy. The shelves in the bathhouse were covered with this grass, and a pair was a pair of decoction. This was done not only because of a pleasant aroma, but also because of the antiseptic properties of this plant.
In the gardens on Nikon, apple trees, mountain ash, black and red currants began to plant. They also called birds – defenders from pests. The birds were treated with crumbs, grains, linen seeds.
