What the presidential candidates about the right of women at abortion have declared so far: “The woman is a master of her body” / “Yes, in principle”

The main candidates for the position of President of Romania were asked, in the last months, about their positioning on the right of women to abort, writes Presshub, who gathered their statements. Opinions have ranged from the firm support of the right to choose, to more nuanced answers or return to previous statements.
In Romania, abortion on request is regulated by law (Criminal Code) and can be requested until week 14 of pregnancy. After this interval, the medical act is punished with imprisonment or fine and with the prohibition of certain rights, with some exceptions.
For non-chirugical abortion (with pills), the recommendations in the medical guides, in conjunction with those in the pharmaceutical prospects, provide for a limit of 9 weeks.
After more than 9 weeks of pregnancy, this method is no longer used by doctors.
At national level, over 80% of public medical units do not offer abortion services over half of public medical units say they do not make pregnancy interruptions, a report of the Association of Independent Maos.
At European level, the French Parliament voted in March 2024 the inclusion of the right to abortion in the Constitution, and France became the first country in the world that explicitly offers protection for pregnancy in its fundamental law.
There is also a European citizen initiative, “My Voice, My Choice”, which requires guaranteeing access to safe abortion in all Member States of the European Union for which over one million signatures have been collected.
George Simion: “Counseling for women who are pregnant and have no one to consult”
George Simion is applying for gold and has been positioned for the right of the woman to choose to interrupt a task, but she does not agree that abortion becomes a fundamental right, as in France.
In addition, he said, in a press conference in 2024, that he will “promote therapeutic counseling for women who are pregnant and have no one to consult.”
Simion also maintained its position in the show Marius Tuca Show, where he said it is “for the woman's freedom to decide, but from here to including among the fundamental human rights the right to abortion is a long way.
As for the doctors who refuse to do abortions, George Simion said doctors should not be forced to do such procedures if they do not want.
“It is also the right of the doctor. Do not force those doctors to do what you want to do on our body,” said the golden candidate.
Crin Antonescu: “The rights provided by law should not be discussed”
In February 2025, asked about abortion in a press conference, the candidate of the “Romania before” alliance said that the legislation in its current form “should not be discussed” and that it is conservative and is supported by conservative parties does not mean that the rights provided by law can be debated.
“I do not think that the legislation in Romania, as it is now, should be discussed. The fact that I am a conservative, the fact that some of these formations, I would say it all – because including PSD is a party with enough conservative values - I support, it does not mean that rights agreed in the legislation will be discussed.”
Elena Lasconi: “Every woman is a master on her body”
The USR candidate has always positioned firmly in favor of the right to abortion. When submitting the candidacy to the Central Electoral Bureau for last year's campaign, Lasconi stated: “We are in 2024, every woman is a master on her body.”
Then, in a moderate debate by Cosmin Nedelcu, known as “Micutzu”, Elena Lasconi said she would even like to organize a referendum by which the woman's right to abortion, Presshub shows. She also stated that she is against abortion as a contraception and that more education is needed on this topic.
“I am against abortion as a method of contraception. I think we should work more in the education area,” Lasconi said in October 2024 in an interview for Free Europe.
Victor Ponta: “I think women have the right to decide alone and believe in the traditional family”
Former prime minister and president of PSD Victor Ponta are applying for the presidential elections in May. He said in an interview for Europa FM that he does not agree with the prohibition of the right to abortion, but stressed that he is a supporter of the traditional family.
“I do not agree with this prohibition in Romania. On the contrary, I believe that women have the right to decide on their own and believe in the traditional family, between man and woman. But no, he cannot have the state against women's law,” Ponta said last month, according to Presshub.
Nicușor Dan: “Yes, in principle”
Nicuşor Dan candidates as an independent in the race for the Cotroceni Palace. He was asked by HotNews.ro in a press conference if abortion could become a constitutional right in Romania as happened in France.
“Yes, in principle I am for the right of the woman to decide on her own body, but there are of course, shades of the fetus and all this,” said the mayor of the capital.
In 2017, Nicușor Dan resigned from the USR, in the context of the party's debate to the referendum for the traditional family. He then said, according to Presshub, that he would not activate “in a party that defines itself as a party of civil freedoms.”
The family referendum aimed to revise Article 48 of the Constitution, in the sense of redefining the marriage as “the union between a man and a woman”, instead of “between spouses”, as provided by the text of the current Constitution. The initiative was supported by the family coalition and was approved by the Parliament, but to produce legal effects, it was necessary to validate by referendum.
Although 91.5%of those who voted were expressed in favor of the modification, the referendum was not validated because the presence at the vote was only 21.1%, below the required threshold of 30%.
