After almost four years of uncertainty, the case of Tom Phillips, the father who ran away with his three children in the Waikato wilderness, ended tragically on Monday, when the man was deadly shot by a robbery. The two remaining children were recovered and are safe, cooperating with the authorities.
It all started before Christmas in 2021, when Tom Phillips fled to Waikato with his children: Ember, 9 years old, Maverick, 10, and Jayda, 12, after a dispute with their mother. Phillips did not have the legal custody of children.
The Waikato region, vast and difficult to access, with forests, agricultural land, cave networks and small rural settlements, offered a difficult shelter to discover. Phillips came from a family of farmers in Marokopa, a small coast community with less than 100 inhabitants, isolated and difficult to locate on the map.
How he managed to hide with the children and survive in the harsh land remained a mystery, and the speculation that he could have received help from the community persisted over the years.
Sporadic disappearances and appearances
Phillips' case was preceded by another short run in September 2021, when he and his children were missing, and his car was found abandoned. After 19 days, Phillips and children were discovered in the farm of his parents. Although he claimed he just wanted a “Long camping trip to clear their thoughts ”was accused of wasting time and police resources.

In the next almost four years, their appearances were rare and passing. Phillips was also involved in an armed robbery in a bank in May 2023 and a robbery attempt at a grocery store in November 2023. In June 2023, the police offered a reward of $ 80,000 for information, but the traces were abandoned.
Authorities have described his lifestyle as “unusual”, By avoiding the social networks and traditional banks, and the way he survived along with the children remains unknown. On the social networks, video clips with Phillips and his children dressed in camouflage clothes appeared, going through the agricultural lands in Brownopa
The tragic end
On Monday morning, the police were called to a commercial property in Piopio, where a robbery was reported at an agricultural supply store. Phillips and one of his children fled with an ATV, but were intercepted by the police. During the incident, an officer was attacked, and Phillips was shot dead.
Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers said: “The official identification of this man has not yet taken place, but we think he is Tom Phillips“Rogers said that one of the children was found on the spot.
Following a large search that involved over 50 police and a helicopter, Phillips's two remaining children were located Monday at 4:30 pm at an improvised tent in an isolated area. The children were alone, but they are fine and cooperate with the authorities.
The mayor of Waitomo, John Robertson, said: “I am destroyed, to be honest, and many in the community will be devastated that this was the result after three and a half years, four years. I had hoped that the situation could have been resolved by negotiations with Phillips”.
The mother of the children, how much, said she feels “deeply relieved ” that “Calvary” her children went through was concluded: “We missed them very much every day for almost four years and we look forward to receiving them home with love and care ”.
