Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, met with Robert Fico, the prime minister of Slovakia, in Beijing, the two making short statements to the press.

Putin said Moscow never opposed Ukraine's accession to the European Union and rejected the accusations that Moscow intended to attack Europe, writes The Guardian.

He argued, in the comments reported by Reuters, that with the expansion of NATO to the east, the Alliance wanted to absorb the entire post-Soviet space, and Russia had simply to defend its interests. He also repeated that Ukraine's accession to NATO would have been unacceptable to Russia.

Fico is the only leader from a member state of the EU present in the capital of China, at the SCUMITI.

Robert Fico said that, after the discussions with Putin and the return to Slovakia, he will also meet with the Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski.
