Since its office, President Karol Nawrocki fuels nationalist moods in the country. He blocks help for Ukrainian citizens, and in the anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, he demands war reparations from Germany – comments the German daily “Sueddeutsche Zeitung” on Monday.

Karol Nawrocki is the president of Poland less than four weeks, but he is urgently fulfilling his election promises – he was assessed in a newspaper from the south of Germany. According to the journal, anti -German slogans are increasingly heard from the beginning of the presidential campaign. “They are directed not so much against the Germans himself, but against Polish politicians who allegedly are too close to Berlin, such as Tusk,” reads “Sueddeutsche Zeitung”.
“Nawrocki, a historian by profession, former director of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk and the Institute of National Remembrance, imposed a public opinion of the PiS history,” said the German daily. The president is silent about the successful path of Polish -German reconciliation, an example of which is the meeting of the former Chancellor of Germany Helmut Kohl with Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 in Krzyżowa in Silesia – added. It was noted that PiS consistently omits the topic of war reparations from Russia – a state that is the successor of the Soviet Union, whose Red Army invaded Poland on September 17, 1939.
The daily estimated that The postulate of Nawrocki's war reparations during the anniversary celebrations at Westerplatte met with the opposition of Prime Minister Donald Tusk. In his speech, Tusk reminded who was the enemy and who is an ally. The newspaper noticed that Tusk did not mention Germany as a partner, but emphasized cooperation within NATO.
The German daily criticized Nawrocki for vetoing the government act regarding the help of Ukrainian citizens. He emphasized that the president acts in accordance with his electoral slogan “First of all Poland, first Poles+”. (PAP)
