President of Portugal also pointed out that the American leader is trying to negotiate only with Russia, apart from the interests of Kiev and European countries, which must actively strive for participation in talks.
Europe disregarded Trump and his policy
According to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousy, the current situation is the result of the fact that Europe underestimated the influence of Trump and the idea of ”Trumpism”. The President of Portugal pointed out that after the last election in the United States a new balance of power appeared, which changed the political system on the international arena. In his opinion, European leaders now have to fight more strongly for their place at the negotiating table.
In recent weeks, Donald Trump has increased their efforts to end the conflict, which has been going on for over three years. As part of these activities, he invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to a direct meeting in Alaska. After the talks, the American president announced that the negotiations regarding the suspension of weapons were postponed for the rapid achievement of a full peace agreement.
Fears of concessions to Moscow
As EURONEWS previously reported, this Trump's approach raises anxiety among international observers. There have been fears that as part of the negotiations of Kiev, he could be forced to resign from full control over the regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhye and Chersonia, as well as Crimea, which was annexed by Russia.
After meeting Putin, Donald Trump invited several European leaders to the White House, including the President of Ukraine, Wołodymyr Zelanski. The effect of these conversations was to develop a common position on a security guarantee that Kiev demands with the active participation of American administration.
