– There will be no surprises. We will fully consult our allies and we will ensure that there are no safety gaps or in terms of ability – said Whitaker at a press conference.

The ambassador reminded that “Washington regularly consults with allies during the review of his military presence.”

– We determine the way our arrangement, and most importantly, determine the threats, both for the United States and for our allies – emphasized Whitaker.

Defense Minister of Lithuania Dovile Szakaliene during a joint press conference pointed out that “the situation in Ukraine is one of the key factors shaping the future presence of US armed forces in Europe.” Ambassador Whitaker, in turn, announced that Washington's security guarantees for Ukraine would only be possible after reaching a peace agreement.

– Of course, talks on this subject are underway, but first we need a peace agreement – said the ambassador. – We need to end the war, we need peace in Europe. Then, of course, there will be security guarantees.

Whitaker added that talks about security guarantees for Ukraine take place at the level of military commanders and defense ministers under NATO.

On Tuesday, an American diplomat will visit, among others Lithuanian training ground in Podbrodzie, where American troops are stationed. At another training ground – in Rukla, he will meet with the commanders of the Lithuanian Army Division and the German brigade stationed in Lithuania. Issues of deterrent and strengthening of NATO defense, Lithuanian-American cooperation and support for Ukraine will be discussed. Whitaker will inspect infrastructure built in Lithuania to accept American troops and other NATO allied troops.
