Today, August 7, the government has decreed a national mourning day for the funeral of Ion Iliescu, former president of the country. Also today three Romanian teams will evolve in the European Cups, and only one of them would have asked for a moment of silence in the memory of the former president, given that UEFA has left the decision at the clubs.

According to the quoted source, FCSB will not apply for a moment of silence and neither Craiova University.

The first to enter the stage is CFR Cluj, in front of Braga at 7:30 pm in the third Europa League round. FCSB will play against those from Drita from 9:30 pm on the National Arena, in the preliminaries, and Craiova University will face Spartak Trnava from 9.30 pm, in the Three Conference League round.

The Romanian Football Federation, shortly after the death of the former president, announced that at the matches in the 2nd tour of the Romanian Cup, held on August 6 and 7, a moment of silence will be held.

The fans of the teams in the competition received the moment with whistles, huids and scandals. The most vocal were the supporters of Poli Timișoara.

At the match between CS Sânandrei Timiș and SSU Politehnica Timișoara, played on the Carani arena, the moment of silence was not respected. Referee Claudiu Matiș called the two bands at the center of the field, at which point Poli's footballers went in their own half and started walking the ball. During this time, on the live broadcast the songs of the gallery were heard.

The ultras of Poli Timișoara also chanted “Iliescu, guilty for the shed blood” and also sang the “Anthem of the Golan”.

Neither the fans of the Progresul received the moment nor the ultras of Chindia. The moment of retreat was harshly challenged by football fans on social networks, and several fan groups displayed banners to express their disagreement with the federation's decision.

Ion Iliescu, charged for crimes against humanity

Ion Iliescu was charged in the mining file of June 13-15, 1990, respectively in the Revolution file.

In the first file, recently sent to court, Ion Iliescu, Petre Roman and 6 other defendants are accused of crimes against humanity. Specifically, that “they launched a policy of repression against the civilian population in the Capital, after which 4 people were killed, 2 people were raped, the physical and/or mental integrity of over 1,300 people were injured and over 1,200 people were persecuted.”

The file of the Revolution, with Ion Iliescu among the defendants, was sent by the JCCJ back to the Military Prosecutor's Office in September 2024, 35 years after the facts. And in that file to Iliescu is brought the accusation of crimes against humanity.

Specifically, it would have supported a systematic operation of misleading public opinion between December 22-30, 1989, a manipulation that had “as consequences the generation and amplification of the generalized psychosis of terrorism, psychosis causing numerous generalized fratricidal fires”.

“Thus, 857 deaths occurred, 2,382 injuries of persons, 585 serious freedom deprivations, in violation of the general rules of international law and 409 cases of large suffering,” according to the indictment of military prosecutors.
